Life Cycle Costs: Resin Flooring vs. Vinyl Composite Tile 

To avoid rising material and maintenance costs in your facility, proper floor selection is a key component.  Often, flooring projects are budgeted as inexpensively as possible based on upfront costs, but end up costing more in replacement and repairs over time. This blog highlights a few areas where a resin floor can offer long-term, cost-saving benefits.  

High-Moisture Areas 

Often times during the design stage, consumers make the mistake of installing vinyl composite tile (VCT), sheet vinyl, and resilient vinyl flooring, in high-moisture environments – these include tub rooms, kitchens, showers, washrooms, wet labs, warehouses, and other areas prone to contact with water and other liquids. In each of these areas, water damage can force the owner to replace VCT and sheet vinyl flooring prematurely, as their unsuitability causes irreversible damage. Resin flooring is preferred for water-resistant protection. 

High-Traffic Environments

Heavy-traffic areas, such as hospitals, where vinyl flooring is often destroyed by rolling hospital beds, wheelchairs, and castors, benefit from seamless resin floors. While some flooring, such as VCT, may offer a cheaper alternative, they require upkeep and maintenance (cleaning and waxing) not only for aesthetic purposes, but for performance too. Epoxy and urethane seamless floors offer easy-to-clean durability without expensive, labor-intensive waxing and buffing.

Slippery Areas

Slip-resistant floors are designed with material properties to help reduce slipperiness and increase traction – a feature that is critical to protecting employees, customers, and visitors in both industrial and commercial facilities. Resin floors can do just that. A commercial area, such as a grocery store, thrives on its customers, which is why their safety is of the utmost importance. VCT is not recommended in aisles near the freezers or butcher sections, as leaks and traffic can cause the VCT floor to lose traction over time.
